String Instruments on The Exchange
Violins, violas, cellos, and basses — provenance tracked, condition verified.
String instruments are unique in the music world: a 200-year-old violin can be worth more than a new one. Provenance, condition history, and setup quality matter enormously. The Exchange's Instrument Passport tracks ownership history and service records, and our condition assessment covers everything from top cracks to soundpost position.
A well-repaired top crack can be nearly invisible and have zero effect on sound or value. An unrepaired crack is a serious issue. Our condition assessment distinguishes between "No Cracks," "Repaired Crack — stable," and "Open Crack."
Bridge fit, soundpost position, string choice, and fingerboard dressing dramatically affect playability and tone. A professional setup costs $100-300. Check whether the instrument has been recently set up.
For instruments over $5K, provenance (maker, origin, ownership history) significantly impacts value. Italian, French, and German schools each have distinct characteristics. Our Instrument Passport tracks this history.
Fractional sizes (1/2, 3/4, 7/8) exist for younger players. Full-size (4/4) is standard for adults. Violas come in various body lengths (15"-17"). Always check the size before purchasing.
A good bow can cost as much as the instrument. Pernambuco is the traditional standard; carbon fiber offers consistency and durability. Check our Bows category for dedicated bow listings.
