Buying Guide: Bows

The bow is arguably as important as the instrument itself. A great bow transforms tone production, articulation, and dynamic range. Material, weight, balance point, and camber all affect performance. Our condition assessment covers hair condition, stick straightness, rehair history, and tip integrity.

Pernambuco vs. Carbon Fiber

Pernambuco (Caesalpinia echinata) has been the standard for centuries, offering unmatched responsiveness. Carbon fiber bows provide excellent consistency, durability, and value. Both have a place — many professionals carry both.

Weight and Balance

Violin bows typically weigh 58-62g, viola bows 68-72g, cello bows 78-82g. Balance point affects how the bow feels in your hand. Our sellers provide weight and balance measurements.

Hair Condition

Bow hair stretches and loses grip over time. Most players rehair every 6-12 months. Check the seller's rehair history — a freshly rehaired bow is ready to play immediately.

Check the Tip

The tip plate (often ivory, bone, or synthetic) protects the most fragile part of the bow. A chipped or missing tip plate needs immediate repair. Our condition assessment rates tip condition.
