Buying Guide: Bass Guitars

Bass guitars take more physical punishment than most instruments — heavier strings, bigger frets, and longer scale lengths. Our condition assessment covers fret wear, neck stability, electronics, and finish condition.

Neck Stability is Critical

Bass necks deal with significant string tension. Check that the truss rod works and the neck is straight. Multi-bolt and graphite-reinforced necks offer better stability.

Active vs. Passive Electronics

Active basses (with onboard preamp) offer more tonal flexibility and hotter output. Passive basses are simpler and have a classic tone. Many modern basses offer switchable active/passive modes.

Scale Length Affects Feel

34" is standard, 35" provides tighter low-B on 5-strings, 30" short scale is easier to play. Choose based on your playing style and hand size.
