Buying Guide: Acoustic Guitars

Acoustic guitars are living instruments — tonewoods age and improve over time, but they're also susceptible to cracks, bridge lifting, and neck issues. Our condition assessment covers top condition, bridge integrity, bracing, and action setup.

Top Cracks are Common

Spruce and cedar tops can crack from humidity changes. A properly repaired crack is usually stable and has minimal impact on sound. An unrepaired crack will worsen. Our sellers disclose all cracks.

Bridge Lift is Fixable

Heat and string tension can cause the bridge to pull away from the top. Minor lift is a common repair ($100-200). Severe lift may require a new bridge.

Solid vs. Laminate

Solid wood tops produce better sound and improve with age. Laminate (layered) tops are more durable but don't develop the same way. Most quality acoustics have solid tops with laminate or solid back and sides.

Action and Setup

High action makes an acoustic harder to play. A professional setup ($75-150) adjusts the truss rod, saddle, and nut for optimal playability. Check whether the guitar has been recently set up.
